Cathedral Choir

Our Cathedral Choir comprises a combination of auditioned local singers and Choral Scholars. They sing for the 11am Solemn Mass each Sunday as well as important feasts and solemnities throughout the year, notably at Christmas and during Holy Week and Easter. Rehearsals take place in Cathedral House on Thursdays from 7.30pm – 9pm and there is normally a rehearsal before each Mass at least an hour beforehand.

The choir’s repertoire spans from Gregorian Chant (plainsong) and Renaissance polyphony (such as music by Byrd, Palestrina, Lassus) to contemporary music, including music by Ola Gjeilo and Amy Summers.

As the mother church of the Diocese, the Cathedral is host to major Diocesan celebrations, and the choir are often accompanied by the brass ensemble, Celebration Brass. In recent years, the choir has also appeared in many television broadcasts, including Songs of Praise, Morning Worship and ITV’s Love Your Garden! They are due to sing for BBC Radio 4’s ‘Sunday Worship’ which will be live broadcast from the Cathedral on Sunday 15 August at 8.10am.

New members are always welcome to join this friendly and committed group of singers. Admission to the choir is by audition. Given the high turn over of repertoire, experience in choral singing as well as good music reading ability is expected. If you are interested in joining the choir, please get in touch with the Cathedral Director of Music, Alex Patterson alex.patterson@dioceseofsalford.org.uk or come and talk to us after Mass one Sunday.
